Alabama's medical cannabis program was established under the Darren Wesley 'Ato' Hall Compassion Act (SB 46), signed into law in May 2021. The program allows qualifying patients to use certain forms of medical cannabis under strict state regulations.
- Patients must be Alabama residents aged 19 or older.
- Physicians must certify that conventional treatments have been tried and failed or are inappropriate.
- Qualifying conditions include autism; cancer-related cachexia, nausea, or vomiting; Crohn's disease; depression; epilepsy; HIV/AIDS-related symptoms; panic disorder; Parkinson's disease; PTSD; sickle cell anemia; spasticity from spinal cord injuries; chronic pain; and terminal illness.
- Allowed products will include tablets, capsules, tinctures, suppositories, transdermal patches, nebulizers, and topicals.
- Smoking, vaping, raw plant material, edibles, and food/drink-infused products are prohibited.
- Home cultivation is prohibited.
- Alabama does not currently issue medical marijuana cards — the program is still in the licensing phase.
- Recreational cannabis remains illegal in Alabama.
- Personal-use possession of cannabis is currently a misdemeanor for first offense (up to 1 year) and a felony for subsequent offenses.

LeafyRx is not yet available in Alabama because the state's medical cannabis program is still in its pre-launch licensing phase. Although medical cannabis was legalized in 2021, dispensaries have not yet opened due to ongoing regulatory and legal challenges. We will begin accepting patients as soon as the program becomes operational.
